Rockin' Bockin' Chickens is my chicken business, on this thread I will be writing about it.

But first I want you to understand that our chickens are pet chickens, they can live their life out happily, if they are brain damaged- which one of them is- they can stay here, if they are naughty and have escaped from the pen... I just ignore them. :oops:

Meet the flock:
Yvaine, our rooster. Yes it's a girl name, but our baby chicks that we give girl names turn out to be roosters.

Buddy; The Wonder Chicken

Chapter One:
Hatching

There were 23 eggs in the incubator, some had already hatched, some were in the middle of hatching, some weren't ever going to hatch. In the corner there was one little blue egg that hadn't yet hatched. The little grey chick inside that little blue egg was preparing for her amazing entrance. The little grey chick rested her beak against the egg shell and tapped. It was much harder than she had thought. She whacked the shell again. It was really hard. After hours and hours of tapping and whacking the little chick finally managed to pip the egg. She was sooo tired. She thought to herself, I'll just have a little nap.
While the little grey chick rested three humans were standing outside the incubator, watching her.
"She's been in that egg for a long time!" The smallest human cried. "It's been nearly a day!"
"We'll give her a little more time." The big human ushered the two smaller humans away.

Once more the humans stood outside the incubator. "Mum! It's been a little more time!" The smallest human cried, she really wanted baby chickens.
"But what if she's just resting?" Asked the medium human, she was worried, this was the first time they had hatched chickens- well not the first time, but the first time that they were meant to hatch- she wanted it to go well. Their flock was rather small, they needed these baby chicks.
"Clara, We have to help her!" The smallest human looked at her older sister, she was meant to love chickens!
"Izzy! She might just be sleeping!"

While Izzy and Clara argued, the grey chick hit the egg shell with her beak, her hits slowly losing strength. I need to get out... she fell into a deep sleep.
By now the little grey chick was only egg left in the incubator, and the mum human was getting worried. "We are going to help her." She decided.

The grey chick was awakened by tapping on the egg, she peeped once and the tapping grew lounder. Then the egg shell was peeled away. The little grey chick pushed her way out of the egg and into the warm incubator.

"What an amazing way to hatch." The big mum human laughed.

This is what the little grey chick would have looked like:

Chapter Two

"This chick has splayed leg." The grey chick lifted her head and saw the humans again, why can't they leave me alone?! She thought, I just won't to sleep! She watched Clara and Izzy start yelling, "What?!" She watched as the big human opened the incubator, what no! She didn't want to leave the incubator, it was too warm! The big human gently picked the grey chick up. "Look." The mum human pulled the grey chick's leg away from her body and showed Clara and Izzy how when she let it go it went back to the chick's body. The human mum did the same with the chick's other leg, showing Clara and Izzy how it didn't bounce back like the other one.
"If I put her down like this." The human mum placed the grey chick down and one of her legs slid to the side.
"Oh no! Is that bad?" Izzy asked, she had fallen in love with this chick, mainly because she hadn't been allowed to hold it yet.
"It could be better." Clara said glumly. "Her legs will have to be taped together. That should teach her to stand." The human mum was nodding along with Clara. The chick was worried, what where they going to do to her?

The big human mum spread out a towel on the ground with tape, scissors and Clara and Izzy on the sides and the grey chick in the middle.
The human mum knelt on the towel and picked up the little grey chick, "Tape." Clara passed her the tape, and she wrapped the chicks legs together, "Scissors." Izzy passed her mum the scissors. The human mum cut the tape and placed the little grey chick on the towel again. "That should do the trick. Give her a couple of days and she'll be as right as rain."

Three days later the tape was taken off the grey chick's legs and she could stand! She raced around like crazy, chirping to all the other baby chicks. "Hello! I'm here! Never fear!"

"She's going to need a name. What should we call her?" Clara said and Izzy nodded beside her.
They paused and thought for a moment then said simultaneously, "BUDDY!"

Chapter Three

"Can't catch me, Alf Alfa!" Buddy yelled as they raced around Clara and Izzy's front yard, the baby chicks were now a month and a half old and the big human mum said that they were nearly big enough to go out with the big chickens. Izzy and Clara had gathered all 18 chicks in their arms and squealed, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"
The human mum had then relented and ran inside laughing, "Okay! Okay!"

Anyway, Buddy and her best friend Alf Alfa- who was also grey- were playing tips and racing each other around the humans' front yard as the sun set.
Soon Izzy and Clara would be running round trying to catch them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That night Buddy and Alf Alfa snuggled together in one corner of the porta cot that they slept in and all the other chicks were in the middle of the cot.
Buddy and Alf Alfa fell asleep instantly, they were exhausted after playing all day.
But they were awoken in the night by a low growl coming from outside the porta cot. A fox ripped through the cot and tore into the nearest baby chick, then the fox moved on to the next and the next until all the babies had been consumed. Then it turned tail and fled.
The next morning Clara and Izzy ran outside happily to see the chicks. "AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"
Clara and Izzy were petrified by the scene before them, blood and feathers and legs and wings and eyes and heads. Izzy and Clara bounded through the mess and peered into the cot, "Izzy! Buddy and Alf Alfa! They're in here! Alive!" Indeed Buddy and Alf Alfa were the only chicks left!
Chapter Four
Buddy and Alf Alfa were fully grown now and they were living in the chicken pen. They shared the coop with Son Please Don't Poo On Me- the rooster, Miserable Weather, Tiredy, Mrs. Matches, Princess, Tassie, Rosie, two young chicks and 6 ducks. They were fitting in well despite the fact that the night they had moved in, 10 of the ducks babies- they were chickens- had gone missing. Half the pen blamed Buddy and Alf Alfa for the disappearance of the 10 chickens.
Princess could be heard muttering in her sleep: "They killed them. They Killed Them."
Buddy didn't pay any attention to Princess and the others that made fun of her, but Alf Alfa did. She got into a fight with Miserable Weather one night and was hurt really, really bad. The humans didn't notice and Alf Alfa died soon after of an infection.
Buddy told herself that she had to prove herself to the other chickens, Alf Alfa's death had left her reeling and she was feeling sorry for Alf Alfa and herself. Princess still thought that Buddy and Alf Alfa were responsible for the 10 chicks deaths.
One bright and sunny morning, before the humans had come to feed them, Buddy put her plan into action. She was going to escape from the chicken pen and bite the humans' dog.
Buddy stretched her wings and jumped up... over the fence and onto the other side. Then she froze. The big, black dog was standing right in front of her, dribbling onto the concrete. Buddy looked at the dog and bit him, right on the nose. The dog howled and snapped at Buddy. Buddy squawked and flew into the air, narrowly missing the dog with her wings.
The dog chased her around the yard, barking and howling, snapping and drooling at her. Finally one of the humans noticed, it was Clara, she dropped the bucket of scraps that she was carrying and lunged at the dog raced past her. The dog was so exited that he peed... everywhere, on Clara's foot, on Buddy's foot, on the scraps, everywhere. Buddy jumped back over the chicken pen fence and laughed at the dog, "HAHAHAH! Can't catch me!"
Clara shrieked, "You silly dog! You weed all over me!"
OMG! The drama! The tragedy! It's like Game of Thrones. You could call it "Game of Combs"!
Seriously though, you've had some rotten luck with your chookie-babes, I am sorry.:hit
You've got some great names - "Miserable Weather", "Son Please Don't Poo on Me"...:lau
I've got little Silkie, Sussex and Plymouth Rock eggs in the incubator right now. And a Silkie egg pipped in the night!
Another one! Another Silkie egg is pipping right next to the first!
Gee, I'm really good at updating aren't I? :rolleyes:
Anyway, out of the 24 eggs I had in the incubator, 16 hatched. (Photos in next post as well, and probably the one after that too :oops:)
