But if I poison it and a chicken or other wildlife eats the eat won't they get poisoned too?Get a bait box. That population of rats will explode come warm weather. It's all fun and games when they are only digging holes around the coop but when the population expands and they start digging into the insulation of your house walls it becomes a nightmare. If you have a near by neighbor it will be the same for them.
Honestly, get a bait box with chunx bait. Completely safe for chickens and pets and everything other than what crawls inside to eat some of the bait. Plan on using a lot of bait for the first few weeks then it's just a matter of refiling it with a few chunx every few months.
Okay good. We already have one of those bait boxes, it was left here when we bought the house. I'll just need the bait. The amount of poison that kills the rodent is not enough to kill a predator. You'll be lucky to find one dead on the lawn. They crawl back into the hole and die there.
I'll set the snap trap until the bait gets here. Even if i get it in the mean time then I will have it on hand. The link above is for the fast acting bait. Use that. The other kind is slow and designed to rid an established population as they feed it to the young.
Those 4 lbs pails last quite a while so the fast acting bait will wipe out what you have now and kill anything that moves in in the future before it produces a litter.
