Last night when I let the chickens out Rodney (2 1/2 month old baby roo) strolled into the yard towards my little dog, Leo (don't worry Leo just watches and guards - no attacking). I kept telling Rodney to watch where he was going. He was too busy looking at the ground. When he finally stopped and looked up, his face was inches from the dog's face. Poor Rodney, he screamed and ran away. I like to free range my chickens, but they won't be unsupervised until they are older. Rodney failed his safety test. But, to his credit, Leo has been hovering over them since they were eggs. Maybe he is not scary enough. He's a little Lhasa Apso. They are actually little guard dogs, but he doesn't know he is little. I would prefer that the chickens be afraid of all dogs, and not walk up to them though.

bet he watches more carefully NOW!!!

Leo thinks he is a guardian dog, but I don't know what he would do if a big dog went for the chickens. Earlier this year my daughter visited with her Scotty dog (Leo hates him), and a door was left open to the room the brooder was in. Leo was outside and the Scotty took a silkie out of the brooder and killed it. Leo was so devastated, he had a grand mal seizure. Yes, he is epileptic. He loves the chickies. He was later diagnosed with adult onset hydrocephalus. Poor baby. While recovering, his favorite thing seemed to be laying in the yard watching his chickies. Now when the Scotty comes, he watches him like a hawk.
