Wyandottes7 gave you some good advice. For really high egg production, I would recommend Sex-links, Leghorns, Production Reds (hatchery Rhode Island Reds) and Australorps. Wyandottes, Easter Eggers, and Orpingtons also tend to be great egg layers.

Welcome I would say 8 to 12 would be a great start..... watch out for "chicken math" it gets us all LOL
