Greetings all,
I am a retired journalist, now living on a small farm high up in the wooded hills of Sweden, about midway between Stockholm and Gothenburg. I am a chicken newbie, about to build a henhouse and chicken yard. I plan to get hardy Scandinavian Hedemora hens, about five or so.
I want the hens for eggs, helping with the gardening, and company. They will mostly have free access to the surrounding forest and permaculture gardens. I came across BackYardChickens while researching everything I could find about keeping chickens.
My partner Marie and I keep bees in top bar hives, and we have Friesian horses that live pretty much free. They have open shelters, free access to forest and fields, and have no lumps of iron nailed to their hooves.
