With the news alert that romaine lettuce may be contaminated with e coli, I'm getting rid of the romaine lettuce in my refrigerator.
Someone told me that I could still give it to my chickens??? I'm leary of this but would really like to know if that is safe to do.
I've looked on the internet and can't seem to find the answer to my question.
Does anyone know absolutely (no guesses!!!) if that is safe or not, not only for the chickens, but for the eggs they'd produce.
Thanks so much.

They have not actually yet determined the origin of the E.coli source, but suspect that it may have come from romaine lettuce. The types of E.coli that cause this type of serious illness are very bad for any animal or human. So, I would not give it to your chickens. Mine like kale or cabbage in small pieces a lot more than lettuce, but give in moderation.

Thanks everyone. Did anyone find any info anywhere about this? I still can't find any definitive information, other than scientific reports that say that all farm animals, chickens included, naturally carry e coli (certain strains) in their bodies all the time.
But, as you all advised, I'm throwing it away.

When we lived in Turkey years ago, we had to soak all our veggies in a small amount of bleach added to the water for 30 minutes due to e. coli.
