Roo charged me today.

And I thought I was raising him up nice. He's only 8 months old. I sure hope it doesn't get worse from here. Nasty Roosters is the reason I was afraid of chickens in the first place. He may just have to go on down the road. All my girls are very nice and polite. I said I was going to try a roo because everyone says it makes the hens happier and he helps protect the hens. If he's gonna be nasty tho he may have to go!!

There are too many roos out there to put up with a mean one. Make Coq au Vin (mean rooster stew) and find yourself a polite boy who will play nice.

I would give him a second chance, but I am new at this (2 1/2years). My sweet, loving, cuddly roo charged me, but I had removed a brooding hen from the coop who had no eggs. When I lifted her from the empty nest, she sounded like I was tearing her legs off, biting her head and munching it to a bloody pulp, and ripping out her guts with my bare hands. His one mission in life, ok, his second mission in life, is to protect and defend his hens. I saw him hesitate, but on he came! I hit him with my slipper until I worked my way to the hose and then let him have it. I have had to do this twice, but I am wiser when I deal with his hens and give him the benefit of the doubt, and he is wiser when he sees me with the hose. In between times, he loves to be held and petted and cuddled, and talked to, everyday several times a day. I really love him and was willing to give him chances. That is the bottom line I guess. I must say, my children are grown so I have no worries where that is concerned.
