It just noticed it today and he didn't have it on Friday. It looks like bits of black tar dripped down each side. I would say it was an injury and it is dried blood, but because it's black, it doesn't look like blood. Anyone know what this is?

My entire flock had to be treated for lice and mites recently, and I did a lot of reading up on it. My roo was the only one who had what you're describing (black spots on both sides of his comb, and also a slight discoloration of the feathers right where the comb meets the back of his head). Those are most likely flea bites (yeah, I know....

). You might want to check all your birds around their vents, and if you see tiny creatures running, or little white egg sacks attached to the bottom of the feather shaft, mostly around their vents and under their wings, treat the entire flock with Seven Dust (5). Works great, and kills all the crawlies:).
Oh, and also, I gently cleaned his comb with witch hazel, and then put neosporin on it, to help it heal.

Yes, he's a runty guy, and he's gets chased by my big roo (I only have 2). It might well be from cuts, but now I've gone and googled "fowl pox" and I'm totally freaked out that he's got the pox plague or something.

Or, some said, black spots can come from flea bites. I will try to take a pic tommorrow and post it here, maybe that will help to identify pox versus scars.

I feel itchy all over now.
