Glad he's working for you even if he is aggressive: don't know if you are aware, but with that straight comb, what you have is a beautiful Barred Plymouth Rock boy...Dominiques have pea combs.

I had never handled this young rooster before so by picking him up and carrying him around made him very uncomfortable. I didn't mean carry him around and pet him, I just carried him around while I did my chores outside in one arm, I did this on and off for 1 week and he decided that being near me was not a good thing and has left me alone every since. I agree that handleing roosters can make them aggressive but not always. Some times no matter what you do (leave them alone/ pet/hold) they can turn aggressive its the way there brains are programmed. My first rooster when I was a kid, I carried him around and he was never aggressive. My nephew has a rooster that he carries around and he is not aggressive so that theory that handleing them makes them aggressive "in the first place" doesn't hold. All rooster behave differently

My 4 1/2 month old RIR drew blood twice this week, when I was feeding. He reached in and 'missed' the food, getting my hand instead. I think he did it on purpose

so I "pecked" him back the second time. I did not have time to peck back the first time, because it was unexpected. He has not done it agian, but I am watching him.

I have hand raised my roo Bird. He jumps up on my shoulder and preens, gives me gifts, love, etc. even wing dances me at a year and a half. would never touch me. (I trust him 95%) BUT boy, let my DH come around and turn his back and WHAM! DH has given him the agression back with his foot (not really hard) and most of the times that makes Bird lay off for a few weeks. Bird went after my Dad as well. Got to close to the girls. dunno, i just put up a mean rooster sign, " travel at your own risk"

Once they start showing meanness, it's most likely too hard to get them to stop, at least with all the mean rooSTERS I've tried all the tricks and ideas with. Bantams taste just fine. If you're worried about them being tough, cook it in a crock pot. They have just about the same amount of meat as a guinea hen but taste a lot better and nowhere near as tough and stringy.

buh bye for him---do not hatch eggs from him your passing his genes on for that. Any nasty roo -no matter how loved they once were-gets processed-ugly truth about what should be done..Just being honest

Last week the Light Sussex roo drew blood through thick jeans and thick socks (we do dress sexy this part of France). I was my fault: I appeared suddenly from behind the tree where he and some girls were dust-bathing. OK, the initial attack showed he was doing his job. Persisting in it showed just a mean streak. He got his feathered arse kicked and moved out of range but still kept leaping and lunging. A handful of pine cones proved to my satisfaction, at least, that I can still hit a moving target 4 out of 5.
Our Copper Black Maran roo stopped being a pain after a run-in with a broom - still took both ends though.
