do we already have a rooster thread?

I love my roo's over the years they are really something individually special. My Black Roo decided he wanted to leave the big barn and stay in the Horse barn. He likes to sleep there. During the day I often find him hanging out with my LGD. With the heat my LGD will come in the house to lay infront of the fan. Then in comes roo tired of waiting outside for his pal comes in the house and plops down near his buddy. He's just a roo that is special. Momma hen nested in the Horse barn and didn't think much of it because roo had already been there staying in the horse barn. What caught me by suprised is last night I went into the horse barn to get feed and always check on momma hen has put herself up for the night. Roo started growling, was taken back that he could make such a sound that was low, and pitched very drawn out. Looked over to check momma hen and babies spot and momma wasn't there (am sure she is done with these little babies and has gone back to the main barn) The babies were there by themselves, and I wondered if Roo is watching over them more with momma hen gone? I love him for it. Roo sounded really good and serious no doubt it was a warning type sound. "will post a picture when I get one"

That is a sweet rooster. I love reading your story about him, please continue and post picture.

It is great to have this thread dedicate to the rooster of our lives.

My rooster is sweet, yes, he also attack us once in awhile, we watch out when he is near by. He loves hugs and being pamper.

My rooster is older now, 6/7 year of age and he is losing his balance, he jumps on the hen with his tail to their head and his head to their tail. Worse still he also jump on them with a cross position - hen's head north, his head east. They are losing their feather because of his old age.

He does not do much of a mating dance anymore, seem like too much work for him, he just grab and jump on. He also love moment by himself, sometime I can not help to think that he is really tired of doing his job, he would rather be alone here and there to rest. I give him time alone until he goes to the run waiting to be let back in.

I have fear that one day when I let him out in the morning I will find him passed away during the night.

Any update on your sweet rooster?

Any update on your sweet rooster?
there was a rooster in that hatch, and the new roo has grown up to be focus roo of the group. My roo still stays near them, they don't fight. Im afraid he seems to be showing his age am sure he is over 6 or 7 now. Hoping the hen will lay another hatching nest come spring or the new hens will have their own. Am sure Roo will step up for the new babies. If the weather gets vortex cold I will be bringing him into the house. For now he is happy watching over them.

I changed food and my one roo is molting right now "not so handsome right now" but this is the roo that was in the hatch that has become the focus roo for the hens.

my roo that watched over the hen on the nest and grew the babies up. I found him sitting next to the nest of the grown up hens eggs.. Maybe roo hung out with the dog and come in the house once he no longer had a job when the nest babies grew up and didn't need him. Now with new eggs in the horse barn hes back on the job. currently my sussex roo has been coming into the house eating up dog food in the dog bowls. I love them.. he is also very ugly right now molting. Can't say ever in the past I have seen molting before, could this new food really be the cause?

Thank you for the update.
From the photo, he still look so handsome to me. He has such a big job, looking after his flock, the kids and now they grew up he can take a short break. :) He is so sweet. It really is nice to have rooster in flock.

My rooster molt a few times in the 7 years we had him, he only ate what the hens had. I don't know if dog's food could trigger a molt in your rooster.
Without a rooster in my flock, I can see a big different with the hens, they are not harmonious, and there is that love interaction missing - my rooster used to dig out a nest for the pullet to lay her first egg, break up a fight between the hens, and this is very strange..when he sees eggs in the nest box, he sit on them.

My LGD comes in the house for his food. I open the door and he goes to his pillow and Ill bring it too him. Turned around to start walking to bring him his bowl Tasman sitting behind me in the kitchen ..??????? werid... walk past him to go to his pillow and found this.......... lol Poor Tasman..
