It looks alot like a hip issue. Bear (our boy) looked alot like that. The onlh thing I can think to do is make sure he is getting around okay, and can make it to the roost at night. If he decides he's hurt enough to let you catch him, it's getting really bad.
He probably didn't flich when you extended his leg because he's a "tough guy." Chickens are crazy tough, even if they do run in terror from tiny little ground squirrels

The 2nd video looks similar to what my hen Cotton looked like when she injured her leg. Rest in a cage was the only thing that helped her.

thank you. He is the reason we have chickens to start with lol. My son's 1st grade teacher hatched eggs and he is the result. :) never seen another like him and my mother in law has a ton of chickens and roos and he is bigger than all of them. He tried to herd me a couple months ago but i put a quick stop to that and he has settled down into a good boy now.

I agree, seems hip or something. Watching him get into his roost, he has to jump onto 1 before his and it almost seems like his leg gave out. You know how it goes for us, sometimes it gives and we almost drop, thats what it looked like both jumps. But he made it.

ok, thanks, I will. For how long? Til he stops limping? I'm afraid to put him out to free range but he really has a fit without the other girls and the girls are the meanest towards the chicks so I have been putting them out. Those chicks grow fast ya know and we are running out of space.

No, I'm not taking him down. He is already down when I go out in the morning and its on the front side and can't get to it or him. The height of the coop where those front roosts are is almost 6'. We have moved that front roost down to that branch's height (below it). He jumps onto the roost that the ladder is attached too, then hops up to the front one. The pop door is 12" I think, so, between 18 and 24"???

Since this pic, I have cut that space in half, front to back, to allow for the chicks. there is hardware cloth that runs from almost the edge of the side window diagonally to the back corner so the hens can still get to the nest boxes and the ladder is on the front side . but he nor the hens use it. so I cant get to the front to get him because the chicken wire is from top to bottom, stapled in until the chicks get a bit bigger and quit getting picked on. .... and we get the 2nd coop built :)

its probably gonna be awhile til heal cuz everytime he has to jump up n down the roost can keep injuring him just my opinion tho

How long did it take to heal? Did you give aspirin? Should i give him aspirin?

It took Cotton a full month or a little more to get better, but she was so bad at first she couldn't walk at all. It took a couple weeks before she could limp around. I didn't give aspirin, I figured she would rest the leg more if it bothered her.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I wasn't aware I could give my chickens aspirin. Is there a special trick to getting it in them?

I had been giving him a 1/2 tablet, baby aspirin, and would just mix it in his treat but it is always the first thing he grabs from my hand.

Quote: That was my thought too but I also don't want him in pain :/ It's a double edge sword.
