B2A2DB7D-0974-4046-BDAD-74721771FECC.jpeg I have a Roo who is 2 now. Last spring he only had 7 hens & I ended up having to buy them all saddles. About 7 months ago I got him 5 more hens hoping that would help on my hens being over mated and loosing all of there saddle feathers & head feathers. Well it has not sadly. His spurs have come in mostly & he is still in my opinion over mating. I’m not sure if it his nails or spurs that is causing the breaking of the skin to bleed.
My Roo is quite large but gentle with humans. He only has one eye but is their protector. They free range mostly every day. But in the evenings it’s like he mates each one before bed. And I’m sure a bunch during the day . I was hoping as he matured he’d learn how to be more gently to his hens. I don’t want to get rid of him as I feel he wouldn’t survive with one eye & he is such a sweet boy. Just horrible at mating .
Thoughts ?

Roos pick favorite hens and mate with them more than anyone else...

Spur removal is an option that I was suggested before. Saddles are the only other thing I can think of, but maybe finding the correct fit for everyone, which can be a severe pain. Saddles imo are not one size fits all, each hen needs to be fitted, which can be quite the hassle!

Hoping that there is a resolution in the future for you! Best of luck!
