Roo or hen. Barred rock

I have 2 big chickens they are 4 months old. Hoping they were girls. Nobody is crowing, but today a hawk was flying above and the barred rock sounded like a hurt animal making all kind of weird crys. Thinking he might be a boy. He is very bossy and protective of the smaller chickens. Can you tell me if he's a boy or girl

Agree with the above poster. That is a male Barred Rock, he has thick white bars and thin black ones, Pullets will have the opposite.
 
What Fred said--mixed breed cockerel with barred ancestry.

I'm also suspicious of the reddish bird with the barred bird in the last pic.
 
Oh no. Hopefully my other babies will be girls...
 
Looks like a male to me. I'm guessing that he is either a Black Sex-Link cockerel or another mixed breed.
 
The bird you call the Barred Rock is a cockerel. However, it is not a Barred Rock--more like a Black Sex-Link male.
