Roo or Hen??

I just got in 100 brown leghorn chicks and 50 RIR chicks. How or when can I tell which are male or female?

There will be early developers that will start having darker, larger combs at about 3 weeks and soon thereafter and then their will be the late developers also, that might escape the ax by having small combs and being late with crows. I once had that combination of chickens.

You can do it a couple of ways.

Herd them all to the center of the brooder.

Put a can of beer,and a fishing pole at one end,... a bar of chocolate and a credit card at the other.
then just let Mother Nature take over, you should have your answer in under a minute.

or...

Turn on one TV in the house to a NASCAR race,.... and another TV to Dancing with the Stars.
Then let all the chicks loose in the house, and see which way they go.

The RIR chicks that have a dark little stripe on their head will be hens.
