Roo or Pullet? BR chick

Uh, sorry, but pretty low. If there was a market for unwanted roos, then they wouldn't be unwanted ;)
You know, touchy subject, but back when the horse meat market was still going no matter how old or crazy of a horse you had, you could always get $300 from a meat buyer and good horses kept their value. Once the meat market was banned, horse prices tanked and starvation and abandonment increased. People were taking them and dropping them off out in the desert, most horses that are used to being kept can't survive and just slowly starve and dehydrate to death, super gross. I'm not excited about horse slaughter, but culling horses just like culling chickens is a bit of a harsh reality. I never sold anything to a kill buyer, I'm a firm believer in being responsible in breeding, handling, and selling. I don't care how precious your back yard mare is, don't breed unless you or someone you know are committed to giving it a good life for 25 to 30 years.

I shall get off my soap box now...

Oh and as far as waiting on the unknown...we got 6 ducklings last week, no idea on sex and won’t know for quite a while. We don’t plan to keep any drake(s) (bc of the chickens primarily) but how do you not get attached?!?
That's a lot of unknown waiting 😲 yeah, that's 100% our problem too, we'll probably mine more than my hubbys, but still, it's a big problem! The only way for me to not get attached is to not pay them any attention, but then you don't end up with friendly fowl.

Problem somewhat solved, hubby was aligned with buying replacement chicks for "just in case" 🤣🤣🤣 we will be picking up 3 more EE's tomorrow that hatched yesterday. The store just got their order in today, they got 5 breeds and he typically buys 50 each, he had 5 EE and 5 of another breed left to sell, so I had to pay over the phone to have him hold ours! Holy cow, people must be buying as many chicks as we are 😆

I bet yall could give a more accurate call on my ability to sell / give away any "extras" we have than on whether this BR is a roo or pullet 🤣

We share the same soap box.

It’s definitely hard to find people who will take extra roosters. Ive been trying to get rid of 3 for 8 months. I’ve only gotten rid of 2 and I was only able to sell one. And that was because I found someone looking for that specific breed last year when the hatcheries were sold out.

I took my two roosters to a poultry sale, I had bought a couple GC pullets and after I'd been there a few hours without selling the roos the guy I was buying buying GCs from was kind enough to put my roos in one of his empty pens while I took my new pullets home, by the time I got back to give him his crate back both roos were gone and he gave me a $20. I kinda have a feeling he gave me more than he actually sold them for, but his kindness just made my day.

4 1/2 wk update. The comb slowed in development and the feathers are coming in pretty good now. This one and the EE cockerel are the most aggressive, if anyone else makes a fuss or surprises them these two run up on them, I'm not sure how to describe it, but they puff up and stretch their heads up as far as they can and get in the other chicks faces.

Not the best photos today.
