Roo or Rooster?

My Pal actually breeds Chickens and he successfully keeps one Rooster to 2 or 3 Hens..A young Rooster before aged one is called a Cockerel...Rooster at one year old...
Yep, it's done all the time, but always good to have a separate place to put a 'bad' bird.

Thanks, we to this point have just referred to a young bird as a roo.
FYI.....semantics, maybe, but can be important communication terms when discussing chicken behavior.
Female chickens are called pullets until one year of age, then they are called hens.
Male chickens are called cockerels until one year of age, then they are called cocks(or cockbirds or roosters).
Age in weeks or months is also a good thing to note.

Your very right....Although it can work great..I don't have a 10 to 1 ratio either..6 to 1 I have and it's fine ...

I guess where that comes from is when I was a younger man my neighbor had Game chickens and he call a young one a roo and 1 year to 2 year old a Stag and 2 and older a cock.
Correct term is a Cockerel till one years old or a Pullet for females...Then Rooster or Hen....Anyways it does not matter..:frow

As long as you know what sex they are terminology is no big deal....Poor old lady I met once when picking up goats with a friend asked why her hens were not laying?...All she had was Cockerels....:th...My friend took all the Cockerels and gave her Pullets...Poor old dear.....:hugs

we have Been back home 2 hours now. We drove 1 hour and Mrs Sneed drove 1 hour to meet us. This is an awesome young cockerel. I have observed them for about an hour and a half now. He pecked one pullet once and that was it. I feed them some fruit and he would pick up the pieces and call the pullets to eat and then lay it down for them. no aggression at all. When he crowed the first time it scared them because they had never heard it before. lol!! Now standing around pruning them selves together I can breath a little. Going now to get the hardware cloth to finish the run. I am just going to put the new over the chicken wire. I finally have what we wanted to achieve. He is a much more striking bird in person. OH, we put them all in a neutral coop from the start and i'm not sure if that helped but, just thought I would throw that out there.
