Melzawelza, you said that what my father did was despicable behavior, he should have been charged with animal abuse, and should not have been allowed to keep chickens. These are your opinions, and I respect the fact that you have the right to them.
But, I submit to you that my father was extremely good to our animals. He went out of his way to be good to all of them and make sure that they were all safe, comfortable, and very well fed..... all of them...... including the chickens.
As a grown man, I would not have given the rooster as many chances as my dad did!! After about the second attempt at flogging me, that rooster would have lost his head....... quick!!!!!!!!!
After having beat the crap out of the rooster, and seen that he was not dead, daddy could have gone ahead and killed the rooster. But, he didn't!! Instead, he decided to give the rooster one more chance. And, it worked out that the rooster got to live out a long life as "king" of his "queens," with a constantly full belly, and a warm, dry, safe place to live and sleep!
Daddy didn't want the rooster to ever hurt him again. More importantly, he didn't want the rooster to ever hurt another member of his family (me, my brothers, or my mother). But, daddy also knew that a rooster is a creature that one cannot easily "reason" with. And, I don't know (nor does daddy) any roosters that were able to garner much benifit from anger management classes. Therefore, he did the only thing that he knew the rooster would understand..... he beat the $hi* out of him!! Pretty much what a bigger, stronger, more powerful rooster would have done to him in the same situation. And without the rooster having to die, it worked!!!!!!!!
If daddy had beat the $hi* out of the rooster from the get-go, I would have been in total agreement with you about his being cruel to the rooster and that he should not have been allowed to keep chickens. But under the circumstances (a hard-headed, completely unreasonable rooster that was getting meaner and meaner), it is my considered opinion that he did what he had to do in order to protect himself and his family from future harm from the a$inine $0B!!!!!
