All roosters seem to do the wing shuffle (or so I call it) when I put new hens in or let them out of the run. He's trying to control his flock and the girls ignore them.
I have some roosters who seem to like me and others who don't like me at all. Those are usually the ones I've bought, not raised.
we call it the shuffle too! it's hilarious. i like the crazy noises they make, as if to say, "okay, ladies, stay in the group! i'm the leader! did you just leave this quadrant!"
Oh this is too funny. Would this in anyway stop him from becoming the lead rooster? I mean......I have never seen him try to mount any of the girls, but he does act like their protector. He never fights with any of the other roos, not even chest butting. But I never see any of them try to argue with him either.
Of course I did tell him "dont worry ROO, you will be top dog when we start culling". Maybe he understood? LOL. Anyway, does this additional info change any opinions out there?
The rooster dance is funny to watch but its when ya bend down to pick something up and wind up with a rooster on your back that is crossing the line LOL!
If he does try to mount one of the girls in front of you, don't let him do that. Stop him from doing it, because if you let him do that then he thinks he is dominant over you. At least that is what I was told when I first asked this same question.

I agree, although I took alot of flak for stating that opinion. After my one roo did all the courting of me, he got very dominant with me. I broke him in 2 days. One of the things I did was to not allow him to mate the hens in front of me. I am the alpha roo around here and the alpha roo does not let his subordinates mate when he's around. JMHO.
