Hey guys!

So this passed weekend I put tags on my chickens legs and left them a little loose so they can grow into them. BAD IDEA.

I have a rooster who caught his tag in a screw in the coop in the nesting bars, and was hanging upside down when I came in this morning. His foot was bleeding from rubbing against the screw, and his foot is swollen.

Any advise? Please help! I have quarantined him and he is resting now. Thank you!

Can you post some photos of the leg?

Sorry! Here are pictures before I wrapped it. I cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide, put some neosporin and wrapped it in gauze.

I hope what I did was okay!!!

He has eaten a few bites of an apple and drank a little. He appears to be in pain and isn’t moving much.

Poor rooster. He lools like he has sprained or broken his leg. Hopefully, it is just swollen from the trauma. I would spray it with Vetericyn or a similar wound spray or betadine, twice a day, and leave it uncovered. Place him in a small pen or large dog crate with food and water near enoght to reach. If he does not appear to be able to stand, you could try splinting the leg with soft padding, something stiff like popsicle sticks or a finger splint, and wrap the leg and foot in vet wrap (don’t get it too tight.) Hopefully, in a few days he will be okay. A sprain or broken bone can take several weeks to heal. If you use a crate, try to keep him near the other chickens for company.

Personally, I have used leg rings, but stopped after reading about so many mishaps, and the possibility of losing a foot when they become embedded in skin. Many of my hens lost the rings as well. There are other ways of marking them to tell one from another, such as painting a spur or toenail, or spraying BluKote or paint on a leg or on a certain part of the body.
