roofing material for covered run

We're building a covered run next to our coop; we need it covered because there is no shade in our yard. We have 1/2 inch plywood on top, at a pitched angle (like a lean-to). We are in SD and get a lot of strong winds. We were thinking about regular shingles, but the roofing nails would protrude through the plywood; we really don't want anyone bumping their head on nails when they're in the run. Any suggestions as to what would be the easiest to install, yet decent quality material to roof it with?

Have you considered corrugated metal? That's what I used - we get a lot of high winds too. You'll probably need to build a simple 2x4 frame to screw the panels to but it's lightweight, relatively cheap, and reflects heat. Above all it's simple to install.

Another vote for the corrugated metal. We're beginning run construction this weekend and that will be what we use. Appears to be the simplest and most cost effective material.

We used metal roofing on two coops, and some kind of corrugated asphalt (Ondura) roofing on the other. The metal is great! With only 1/2 plywood, you mostly likely will have to run a few purlins across to screw the metal onto though, since the shortest screws I've seen are about 3/4 inch...

I too use metal roofing on my run. I have a local metal scrap yard where I buy such things. Right now scrap metal prices are low. I just just picked up some metal roofing today for $0.35 a pound. Makes for a strong, inexpensive roof that is also predator proof. It is very easy to install as well.

I had a shingle roof installed last summer, added to my coop an covering the run space. Love it! Metal roofing would have been fine, but not added to the shingled coop. Anything will work, as long as you plan for the snow load and wind where you live. Mary

We have a metal roof on our run. It's actually pole barn siding left over when Hubbs did a renovation on our barn.
