Hi-glad to find this site. I'm completely new to keeping chickens, and will need all the help and advice I can get! We have four barred rocks (the Mother's Day gift that got this all started), four Rhode Island Reds, and two buff orphingtons. All are supposed to be female, but we'll see, won't we? All are three or four weeks old-they weren't tiny when we got the first four, so I don't know how old they were then. They have nearly all of their feathers now. Our daughter, the giver of the BRs, also gave us her 10' x 10' dog kennel (her incredibly spoiled Mountain Curr refuses to use it). We plan to cover the roof with metal roofing left over from building our house and shop, zip-tie 2' hardware cloth to all walls, and lay 2' hardware cloth underground along the walls, to discourage digging varmints. We then intend to build a henhouse along one side-hubby wants it the full 10' length, by 6', and there's no telling him that may be a bit too big. I'm just thrilled to be getting such nice housing for the girls! Any and all bits of wisdom will be much appreciated. Thanks for letting me join the "hen party"!
