I agree with having a roo as a protector.
Allow me to share a brief personal experience.
June 2007, Buff Orpington rooster died protecting his flock against 3 weenie dogs.
Today, Buff Orpington/RIR x Roo fought off 2 Pit Bull mixes when they broke into my coop today.
Not a scratch on him...but we did suffer 1 fatality and 1 serious injury (she's doing okay, not sure she'll make it yet).
The Buff Orp x is the son to the one who died (he had JUST hatched a few days prior to the attack), so I would strongly say Buff Orp for a suitable breed in a roo.
