Wondering if anyone has heard or subscribes to the style of roost that is all one level. I've read that if the roost bars are staggered that there can be problems with pecking order. Also I was thinking of using 2"X4"s but not sure if they should be flat or on the thinner side?

Old coop had 2 roosts at different heights. Not much "pecking" went on. I think everyone knew their place.

Our roosts in the new coop ( chicken math) are the same level. Seems everyone wants to be on the roost on the left. 1st come, first serve. Whoever doesn't make it on the left one settles for the one on the right.

My roosts are 2 x 4's with indoor /outdoor carpet wrapped around it. They get good grip and I can hose them off to clean them. We have the 4" side flat for the girls. They can keep their toes warm in the winter as they can set on them opposed to their toes exposed with the 2" side up.

I hope this helps answer your questions.

Got rid of the poop boards as I found it easier to scoop the poop from the floor.
Added "bathroom wall boards" for easy wall clean up. Also used metal joists hangers....mites and other buggies have no where to hide with the stuff.

It works well to have them all on the same level as long as they all get along well and have plenty of room. Last winter my 14 hens and 1 rooster had 2 - 8' roost at the same height, 16" apart. They also had another 8' roost, 18" lower. We used a light on a timer so they would lay better and they picked on each other on the roost

. This winter no added light and everybody will be happy on the roost.

Flat. and all one level.... unless you have Guineas in with your flock. Put in Roosts much higher for guineas. LOL. Makes for a happier coop.

We had two roosts and went down to one when we rearranged the coop. We did not have any problem with pecking order then, and none now. It was really just the Rooster was on the top and the after that was first come first served. Now, the Rooster is in the middle and everyone else spreads out.

I would think it depends on the type of chickens you have. Bantams might need to be a little lower than for a standard size. I have standards and the roost is about 30 inches off the floor. Hope this helps.
