I have 2x4 flat side and a 2 x 3 flat side on the inside of the coop. They use them both pretty much equally. In their run, they have 2x4 layed flat, a huge branch, and a 2x2, which they also use about equally. The 2x4 flat is a good option if you live in an area that has cold winters, as others have said, so they can rest on their feet to keep them warm. Offer several things and see what they prefer. Younger birds will probably go for narrower roosts. Larger/older birds may prefer bigger roosts...

this is what I use, I just clean them really good...then I paint on DE on each branch.....

And where this ventilation area is, just behind this is where they are all installed

so they can see the whole yard.
