Roost design

Pictures of future coop...(I didn't get my tools out) :)First pic is the front, my walk in door will be the middle hole, chicken door on the end. The L side that is closed in( West side) is where I am planning to put the roost (last pic) Back wall has the window the entire length that is covered on the outside with horse panel wire and inside hardware cloth...same as the East side window. My plan is to put the nesting boxes on the E side wall under that window (pic 2). View attachment 3367652View attachment 3367655View attachment 3367651View attachment 3367665View attachment 3367650
The coop was a 50 year old barn/shed on the farm that I was planning to tear down then decided to rehab it...The squareness has gone away over the years so I had to improvise in spots! LOL I basically have replaced everything except the corners that were creasote(sp) posts done before treated lumber became available. The entire outside has a hardware cloth apron and the inside will have a 48" hardware cloth wrap inside the walls.

That's a good amount of space per bird. Can we get some pics of your coop? I think it's great that you're covering all the bases before you get your flock, just want to check out your ventilation because this has me curious.

I also prefer an L or U shape for easy access to my flock

Is that just one roost bar or are there 2? I can tell with the depth perception...

I forgot to mention that the eve across the front is completely open and hardware clothed for ventilation as well....still trying to decide about putting hardware cloth on my door to make it even more breezy....it sits under a 100 year old pecan tree and is fully shaded in the summer. I have a thermometer mounted in there and it was always in the mid 80's at the hottest during the summer because of the good shade.

I was just going to ask if you had ventilation at the top of the roof slope.

Great to hear.

With excellent ventilation, my big coop, Neuchickenstein, is the coolest place in my yard on a blistering hot day.

So just 1 bar per poop board? LOL
Yes, the poop boards are 18 inches wide with the roost centered, the one on the north wall is 7ft and some change, the one on the west wall is 42 inches long. I only have 9 birds currently so plenty of room for nighttime shuffling, lol
