How high off the coop floor should roosting dowels be?

Chickens like to roost as high as possible but most can't jump up more than a couple of feet in one leap

I have my sleeping roosts at 30 inches, and the roost outside the nesting boxes at 18 inches. I made sure there is enough open room in the coop to give the birds a little flight room to get up on the sleeping roosts. Even my mallard ducks get up into the nesting boxes to lay their eggs!

Mine start at 30 inches as well, I have two more above that at angle, all 18 inches apart. I have bantams, light and heavy breeds and all get up on the first one with no problem.

I put my roosts down a foot from the ceiling. That works out to about 30 inches.

we have 2. one is about 2 feet and the other about 4. they seem to like both.
