Read it in Storey's and another post, too. For those of you who have your nest box positioned higher than the roost, are you having a problem with your girls sleeping in the nest and making a mess of it?

Had pretty well finalized my coop plans until I read this, so need to find out soon if I need to change things a bit.

While I'm at it, what is the LEAST amount of headroom you would allow above a roost? There will be a gabled ceiling above ours, with the lowest point leaving 18" of headroom above the roost, and the highest 36". The overall roost length is 48", which will be more than adequate for 3 to 4 standard hens. Rather than redesigning my whole coop, do you think I could get away with raising the roost another 6" to at least make it the same level as the nest box? (Would put headroom at 12" to 24".)

Thank you for any help you can provide this weary brain!!
