Roost height??

I have built a new roost about 5' tall and my chickens still want to roost on nesting boxes which are just 18" off the ground.

My chicks are 8 weeks old. Can they/ How do they, get up on a roost that is 3ft off the ground? Do I need to put them there at night? Or just not worry about it until they get bigger and can get up?

Thanks

Buff Orpington, Plymouth Rock, Easter Egger, Golden Sexlink.

When I went to check on them this morning they were on their roost. Now I need to get them to drink out of the nipples.

the 20 lb wild turkeys here roost about 20-40' up but as someone mentioned the higher up they are the more space they need to glide down at an angle

If my roost is 3 ft of ground how much space do they need to fly down
Cheers Phil

3 ft. They can hop almost straight down if they have to but prefer to open wings for a little distance. The higher the roosts the more they run on landing. 3 ft isn't high at all and wouldn't be too concerned. My roosts are only 18 inches high but do watch the birds hop up into trees and fly down.
