Roost height?

If you have heavy chickens, I'd keep the roosts low, less than three feet, and into a soft landing...foot infections are a frequent result of damage during the dismount. If you want them higher, maybe provide some platforms so they can get up or down in increments.

I have black star chickens. My roosts are at about 5' off the ground. They have ramps going up to the roost, which they mostly use, but they just jump off. They don't have their wings clipped.

Should I lower their roost? I don't want foot infections. Yikes!

Both roosts are 18" off the floor but effective height will vary based on depth of shavings. Hard to see the 2nd roost but both are window view roosts in a 'L' shape. The roosts are 2" x 3" with a round edge.

Beautiful coop Eds500!

My two hens are housed in a horse stall at night. They are both capable of flying over the outer wall, which is about 5 feet high. They are currently sleeping on top of their house, which is also about 5 feet high. If I put some lower roosts in the stall would they use them, or do they prefer to be up higher? I'd like them to roost on a perch since it would be a lot easier to clean up their dropping that way.

I also have 8 chicks that will be joining the hens sometime in May. They are 4 weeks old now and are already flying up to two feet high. i'm assuming they will need lower roosts at first and then will be able to go higher when they are older. Is this correct?
