I just got 6 Black Australorpes that came from a farm, they didn’t have actual roosts and slept on top of nesting boxes or wherever in large room. (They’re young, but full grown and are laying already and using nesting boxes.)
This is 3rd day with them and after we wrangle them into coop and push couple of them out of door to let the others in, 3/4 each day aren’t getting up on roost. They try, but it’s a noisy disaster and keep missing! They land on the Windows and side of coop; or most try to fly into the two hens already roosting at edge of roost near door.
The roost is 8 inches off side of coop and not too high, we lowered it 3”’s last night and under 3 feet up. They can easily fly this high, don’t want them to get hurt and make this easier. I’m having to put them on roost right now. Should I let them struggle or put a ladder of some sort up; or do I need to move roost I middle of coop??? Or let the struggle and figure it out?
Thanks,
