I was under the assumption that when you make a roost for your chooks it needs to be round, like a tree branch. BUT since I have been traipsing through these pages i have found people use all sorts of material and mostly flat?? I thought the chickens were suppose to wrap their feet around the roost/branch??

Either will work. In cold climates, a flat 2x4 will allow the chicken to almost completely cover her feet with feathers to prevent frostbite, etc. I had round roosts when I had chickens many years ago, now using 2x4s. I don't see much difference, except the 2x4's are easier to scrape the poo off. I've requested an opinion from my hens, but so far they haven't expressed any strong feelings...
