I was under the assumption that when you make a roost for your chooks it needs to be round, like a tree branch. BUT since I have been traipsing through these pages i have found people use all sorts of material and mostly flat?? I thought the chickens were suppose to wrap their feet around the roost/branch?? So what works?? What is best?? [IMG]

Either will work. In cold climates, a flat 2x4 will allow the chicken to almost completely cover her feet with feathers to prevent frostbite, etc. I had round roosts when I had chickens many years ago, now using 2x4s. I don't see much difference, except the 2x4's are easier to scrape the poo off. I've requested an opinion from my hens, but so far they haven't expressed any strong feelings...

    Cold climate = 2 x 3's or 2 x 4's. Keeps their toesies warmer.
