What is better for the chickens feet and related health... round perches or flat? Large dowels, like a closet or curtain rod, or a 2x4?

Round can be used but they have to be large. A closet rod is way too small. A curtain rod would also be way too small. Look for a tree limb that is 3 or more inches in diameter. Chickens do not grip a perch with their feet like a parakeet.

I prefer a 2 by 4 with the wide side up. It gets really cold here in winter and I like knowing that the bird can completely cover its feet with its body when it roosts at night. The 2 by 4 was also easy to install.

I think scientifically something like a 3x1 oval is the "ideal" but no need to aim for perfection.

2x3s, 2x4, large branches (at least 2" diameter) are all fine choices.

We have 2x4 narrow up in the coop. 2-3" branch in the run. They use them both.
