Rooster Advise

I can only speak from my experience, and I don't want to generalize breeds as each individual bird is different. But the one Barred Rock rooster I had was very human-aggressive. I had a BO that was not. As I said, this is only my experience.

Roosters will kill their babies so becareful.

My experience has been just the opposite. When I've introduced a hen and chicks back into the flock, the rooster will protect the mama and babies from the other hens. I've seen him drive off a particularly bossy hen when she tried to peck at the broody hen. He will watch over the babies while the mama is dust bathing or eating. I'm not saying they're all like that, just that I've never had that problem.

I currently have a flock of 50+ hens , pullets and chicks...add to that 3 roosters, I am up at 5am to get DH ready for work, the roosters are crowing when I get up...I am not bothered by it, I actually like to sit on the porch with my coffee watching the sunrise and hearing my flock wake up and start the morning routine... Our oldest Rooster is 10 months old, he is a Blue Orpington, he weighs in at around 9-10 pounds, second in command is our 5 month old old Barred Rock, he is a beauty and likes to fly up to the tallest building to do his crowing... last but not least is our 5 month old Jersey giant, he has just started crowing in the last month and still doesn't quite have it down, but I love to hear them...All three are good boys, I do not try to be friend them, they are here for a purpose, I don't hand feed or cuddle, when I walk out in the yard they move away from me. They have their own hens although they all free range together, Ol Blue may chase the others around a bit if they get to close to his hens but to date they have never fought.. they mate and they protect the hens, so far this summer I have had three separate hatches and the roosters all work together to protect the chicks, I have yet to see even one of them so much as even peck a chick.

That said, they crow at different times of the day, morning, noonish or evening. I am fortunate as to live around good people who love my flock and love to hear and watch them.
