Hello Fellow Chicken-Enthusiasts!!

I have had chickens all my life & I have Never raised a rooster with such an aggression towards hens. You see, we have a variety ranging from Barred Rocks, Brahmas, Auracanas & my personal favorites; Red-Blue Laced Wyandottes, that we bought this spring. Now, we have two roosters out of a flock of 14. We have one Wyandotte, that is three times the size of the Auracana rooster, yet is the most gentle. You wouldn't even be able to tell he is a rooster except for his size. The Auracana on the other hand is a MONSTER towards the hens. He is only 5 months old & is already acting as a terror. He does not stop terrorizing the hens ALL DAY, even after we put them in their pen at night.

Is this a normal stage for roosters? Why is the Wyandotte so calm & docile? Should we get rid of the Auracana? If we do, will the Wyandotte start acting out? Why I have not noticed this behavior before?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

The Auracana is probably acting like this because there is another rooster, if I kept two roosters with my 15 hens then one would turn sour. I advise to get rid of him. (I have one right now that I plan on butchering on Saturday)

The thing is; both roosters are the same age. I think I will get rid of him...Such a shame though; the Auracana is probably the most Beautiful rooster I have ever seen!!! I wish someone would want to add him to their flock. I'll get pics up. He has a vibrant blonde mane, rusty-red body with an irradescent luster, a yellow saddle that leads to green/black sheen tail feathers...But evil orange eyes.

That is a great article!! Although, my only issue is his aggression towards the hens. If his behavior is this bad now at 5 months, do you think it will get worse & will then be taken out on us?

I think his aggression for the hens maybe due to another rooster around, but if it's not then your stuck with a bad rooster. If you would like you could take the Wyanndotte out by himself for a week or so and see if the other rooster treats them better. This is stuff you could try only if your willing to take the time and you really want to keep the Auracana.

Welcome! One cockrel will work out best with this number of pullets, and I'd pick the mellower bird myself. Certainly you can try to give the little guy more time, but if he's actually injuring the pullets, that's just too much. I do love the Wyandottes! mary
