This is really weird, but since I've just lost two chicks to "I think" Cocci, I thought I'd run this by you chicken experts.

I was out cleaning out the coop and run and I had the coop doors "cabinet" open to air out and my Awesome Roo who is usually on high alert detail when his girls are out free ranging is in the corner of the coop with his face to the corner and calling one of the hens up there as well. She keeps trying to crawl under him, non of then have been mating that much as it's so stinkin hot here and they are all molting....

Anyway, she crawls under him, his face is in the corner and they are both panting like crazy....much more than the other ones who are dustbathing and laying under the bushes to cool off. They look like they are trying to sufficate each other or something.

WHAT do you think is with this????

Sorry for the delay in replying. How are the two, today? If they haven't played out the final two acts of Romeo and Juliet, I'd guess the roo was simply calling the hen to what he considered a good nesting location (crawling under the roo - hens do this to one another when they roost as well - submission/cold/anxiety/comfort). You might consider a little fan to move the air, or freeze some jugs of water and place them in the run.

If they are anything other than active and alert please post with detailed description (see sticky at top of page)
