Rooster Attack! Advice?

I am sad today. Guess after our run around the coop and Forest hiding under the coop yesterday he wasn't up to watching his ladies today.

When I went out to give the ladies treats and gather the eggs today, I noticed one of my hens missing. We have a six foot fence around the yard and it is dug into the ground 14". The first thing I did was walk the whole perimeter and check to see if the fence had a hole. Nope. So my only assumption now is a hawk.

I thought Forest was good with his ladies.

Of course he didn't give me any trouble today. Tomorrow my husband and I are going to pull the deer netting we have (that wasn't working in the garden) over the top of the yard to protect our other ladies.

We locked them up good tonight though. Just to be sure.

Ah, the wonders of living in the country.

Will have to try that bottle trick. Much easier to carry...and as you said, not so noticeable.

I tried most of the advice on LeMerde this morning. I let the ladies watch me go after him, making dominant chicken sounds (and trying not to laugh at how crazy I looked in the process) and he got the picture. He was afraid of me and he didn't want to go near me...until I put the broom down - then he thought I was defenseless and he was mostly scared of the broom and not me. I rushed him without the broom and he just stood there, even when I poked him. I gave the ladies some acorn squash and let the young roo eat it as well, but I didn't let LeMerde near it. I then chased him away from the flock all the way up the hill and to my front door. I did this about ten times since he pwned me twice in front of the flock.

When I went inside for a minute I could hear him crowing, so I went out again and chased him away and then crowed myself. Thankfully my neighbors like me and didn't take out their video cameras.

Then a nice man who wants darker eggs came by to pick LeMerde up to go live with him and breed with his hens. It was a bittersweet goodbye, but he'll have a good home. I will be sure to dominate my sweet little roo and not be naive about how he will ultimately turn out. I told the man about him biting me and made sure I emphasized that he needed to be dominated, but he seemed to have far more experience than me, so I'm sure I sounded like a noob.

You are all awesome for sharing your stories. Many thanks!

Whoohoo BillickChix! So glad that it was working for you!

I love it that you actually did make rooster noises at him!

Good for you for having the courage to show him who's boss. Most people won't admit it, but a rooster CAN be intimidating-even though he's only a pile of feathers on legs, they can bite, flog and spur.

Speaking from personal experience, getting spurred in the back of the legs while wearing shorts AIN'T fun, but instead of it making me afraid, it made me MAD and determined it wasn't going to happen again.
Glad you found a good home for him and good luck with your young guy.

Haha, I got attacked tonight by Sylvester! I went in to the henhouse to shut the doors and noticed that there were only 2 chickens, instead of the usual 7, so I went hunting!

Apparently a gate had been left open and they had enjoyed a wonderful time in the flower beds! Now it was getting dark.

I found 2 girls by the gate, trying to get back to their home.

I found Sylvester guarding the other 2, one of which was perched up on the window sill of the garage window, and the other that was in the corner of the deck.

When I picked up one of the hens to carry into the henhouse, Sylvester flared up and attacked my legs and feet! His spurs got my ankle THROUGH my thick socks AND blue jeans!

As soon as I put the hen down in the pop door to the henhouse, he stopped attacking and trotted over to the henhouse and entered the pop door!

Good boy, I like protective, I wasn't even thinking, I was just in a rush to get my girls safely inside before total darkness hit.

He never attacks me, UNLESS I PICK UP A HEN! Usually to check on, I am not a big hen "petter", but I have 1 hen that has had a rough time lately, I thought she was eggbound, but I think she is fine, but I don't think she is producing.

I have one of those good roos. Two and a half years old now and never a bit of trouble out of him. His brother yes, but not my Thor. He's never been a pet, he knows who is in charge and is excellent with the hens. He's everything I ever wanted in a roo.

X2 I must be lucky- my one and only ever roo is wonderful. He's 8 months old now and just the best thing I could have ever asked for. He has a healthy respect for me and I never treated him as a lap chicken.

Years ago when I was a kid we had a mean rooster who would chase my sisters and even bit my grandmother. He tried it with me one time and I kicked the**** out of him. From there on out until we put him in the pot, he left me alone.

My current rooster is a two year old RIR who takes good care of the hens and so far is not mean. If he does become mean, he will get the same treatment as the rooster mentioned above. Roosters need to know that you are the boss.

I have a polish crested rooster. He can't see very well, so he is pretty docile. He tries to dominate, but just can't see, so I always make sure to pick him up, turn him over and rock and caress him like a baby. He eats from my hand and follows me arond. Maybe just to pretend like he's doing his job, but he loves the attention. He always comes after me, especially in the , but I either push himaway with my foot, or just let him pretend to attack me. He's just a rooster, after all, and we are ten times bigger. Just hafta be the alpha, I guess.
