I have 1 rooster,a sweetheart, and 1 hen. Lost 3 hens last summer/ fall. This a.m. they are attacked by something that was able to open the top of the run. My collie woke me up because of chickens' sounds. Both gone at first then came back. My rooster is limping badly, won't eat yummies out of my hand and when I picked him up he was "too soft?". Also throat swollen. The throat could it be 2 separate things like some food not ground up and attack or probably both from attack? No blood unless in stool, no feathers missing just ruffled. Anything i can do other than keep him safe and tempt him with yummies every couple of hours. He's a beautiful Easter egger.

Hi,

I would give him some electrolytes, as well as the rest of your chickens who might have seen this happen. That helps with stress. I'd keep him in a cage to try keep him off of his feet for a few days. Then you could soak his leg in warm epsom salt water for about 5 minutes and see if you can see anything wrong. It might just be sprained or strained.

I'd also wet his crumbles or pellets so they're soft for him to eat, and put a few drops of vitamins in there, like Poultry Cell or Nutri-Drench, or similar. Vitamins will help him heal. B-Complex would also. If you have some human version of it, he could have a half of one of yours. Otherwise, if you're going to buy some, I'd get liquid as it's easier to work with. 1/2 dropper of that once a day.

Hopefully, he's okay and just shook up from whatever this was.

I'd fix their run and use 1/2" hardware cloth and attach with wire fence clips.
