Rooster attacked our 18-month-old son pretty bad this morning!

In this Mom's defense, it only takes a split second for it to happen....doesn't mean she left him alone with the chickens. When my oldest was about that age (he's 33 now) we were walking across the yard side by side and out of the blue, before I could even react my rooster hit him. Luckily he didn't get him in the face since he jumped on his back.

I have a SLW cockerel that was very nice until he reached mating age and then started attacking everyone. He put a good gash on my 10 year old nephew's leg. I would have dispatched him right then and there, but I did not have the time to dress him out and I don’t want to waste the meat. He only attacks me when he wants to be a foot ball – I guess he likes that game. As soon as I have the time he is going to get a beer shoved up his butt and thrown on the grill.

Hope your son is okay and this doesn’t give him a fear of all chickens.

It only takes a split second even if the adult is standing right there, let's try not to judge, it won't change what has already happened. Some roos can strike faster than a blink of the eye, I am sure the OP got taken by surprise and learned a lesson. Personally I would not cull the roo, cause it was only doing what roos do, but I would tap it with a stick anytime he got outside of allowed behavior. But can fully understand the feeling to put the roo on the table.
