ME!... Went to a friends and his rooster brutally attacked me! If he were mine .. he would've met the end of the road , but... he's not

SO... my question is do I need a Tetanus shot after getting spurred badly on my leg???? Just woke up this morning and realized he got me pretty good!.. and it hurts, so, just curious!

What do you think?

It might be a good idea and tell friend that roo needs to go,cause someone else might make her/him pay DR bills.....
Wait was it free ranging or was you in the pen?

Don't mess around with tetanus. It is in the soil. Everyone needs a booster now and then, 5 years or so, not sure what they're recommending now. Call and ask.

Just flush it out and apply neosporin, you should be fine. I'd go back over to his house with a pair of pliers and remove that bad boy's spurs.....

yeah, i would get the shot. better safe then sorry! They stand in poo, dirt and all kinda of breeding grounds for bacteria and such. Clean it out real good and get the shot!

And for the roo.....tell your friend you expect FRESH chicken and dumplings

I got one just this morning after slicing open a finger in the kitchen. I wasn't technically "due" until 2010 but since it had been 9 years since my last shot, they wanted me to get the booster.

Tetanus comes from a bacteria that lives in soil, animal excrement, etc.

If the bacteria gets into a wound that is deep enough that oxygen can't reach it, you are at risk ... hence, even small puncture wounds can be problematic, whereas shallow scratches generally are not.

It's a nasty thing to contract ... better safe than sorry. About 1/3 of people who develop an active tetanus infection die from it, even with modern medical treatment. Better to get the shot and be safe if you are not current, since a spur wound could easily fit that "small but deep enough" type if injury that can allow the bacteria to develop out of reach of oxygen.

It is not common in the US, though ... perhaps 50 cases a year. If you have had immunizations regularly, you are probably ok. If you have not had them in a long time, play it safe and get one.

Well.. I sucked it up and went and got a tetanus shot!
I'm not a big supporter of vaccines.... BUT... I started reading on tetanus and.... NOT messing around with that! Nasty , nasty stuff!

Just a note of interest...Don't mean to start some kind of anti vaccine attitude here but...
My daughter has had two very serious reactions to tetanus vaccines. Didn't realize till the second reaction that was so similar to the first that it was the vaccine causing all the trouble. Encephalitas, Bell's palsy, muscle stiffness and pain, etc. Was 11 years old the first time, 25 years old the second. She was so sick she was basically bed ridden for weeks. 3 days in the hospital and doctors still wouldn't admit is was the vaccine. That was 5 years ago. Now, a new doctor told her she should never get that shot again. It most likely was the vaccine. I believe in vaccines and recognize the lives they save. But there are those who just shouldn't have them.
As for the rooster...If he was mine he would be destroyed immediately.
