Rooster behavior

When one of my Roos was about that age, he would flog me non stop. I started wearing long sleeves and leather work gloves in the yard and when he started to attack I reached down and pinned him to the ground until he was calm and then picked him up and carried him around under my arm facing backwards (to avoid biting) while I did my chores in the yard. I would also take a few moments and hold him down at hen level and talk crap to him and let the hens peck at him a little lol he got the message after about 3 times. Once u put him down he should walk away, if not repeat. He will eventually understand that you are in charge. He also calmed a lot once he got over the teenager stage haha

That's pretty sharp "Chicken Psychology" you have goin' there...I like it!

Last night I witnessed my RIR Treetrunks mount another hen rooster style. I had seen other hens squat in front of her for the past couple of days but thought that was just a reflex but after witnessing it now, I am a little shocked. I saw in a youtube video that very rarely hens can become roosters if their ovaries get damaged albeit they cannot fertilize eggs, however as far as I know she is still laying, and apart from the behavior there are no physical signs (at least not yet). Anyone else experienced something similar? I haven't changed anything in their diet, they have been taking organic layer feed (although I did notice that this particular bag had larger than usual grains or maybe I am just being paranoid about it).

My children love her and were getting ready to celebrate her first birthday on March 26th, hopefully she stays a hen till then.

She won't change sex from a hen to a rooster. She may take over the dominant role in the flock and even crow occassionally, but once born a hen she will always be a hen.

Do you have a picture of her?

Its an old picture but she hasn't changed much since then, but I read this article that the hens can change appearance although genetically they would stay as a hen. I just hope it doesn't happen to her.

My rooster got sent to the processors today with the meaties . He was just too aggressive with people. He would stop for a day or so then start in again.

We have 30 layers but ended up with 2 Roos in the bunch. The dominant male is kind & actually protects us from the little agressive guy who will charge without warning.

Just an update. She stopped for sometime when her favorite hen went broody but since the broody started laying 5 days ago, the RIR is back to mating with her again. I guess she was waiting for her lover
