Hi, I have heard stories of male quail attacking each other or males attacking females but I recently had a problem with all 6 of my females attacking my one male. I have 7 quail and they live in a large coop, a couple days ago I came home and checked on them,( i did see one quail chasing him earlier but didnt think much about it since they sometimes chase each other for food) and found my male with his entire head bleeding and his feathers on his head completely plucked and one eye swollen, I seperated him and cleaned him up, now he is getting his feathers back and has no problem with his eyes.
Since then I put him back in the coop to see how the others would react, right away one female started to scream terribly and aggressively approach him, I caught her and seperated her, I had to do this with 2 others that started jumping at him. The other 3 seemed friendly with him. I have one of those rabbit cages where you can seperate the top of the cage from the base, I thought I could place that with the 3 attacking quail inside in the coop so they could still see each other but couldnt attack him. The one female still screamed at him whenever he tried to walk past the cage. This might seem kind of silly but I think that one vicious quail told the 3 that were nice to the male to begin attacking him, since when I came back, he was cornered and the 3 nice ones kept trying to peck at him.
So I had no choice but to seperate the male. Now he is sitting all depressed in a seperate cage constantly crowing to them, I feel bad since he wants company but the other birds hate him. What I dont understand is that they were living together without any problems since September. I dont know what to do with them now, is there any way I can reintroduce him, and has anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance.
