As of today she has a rattling sound when she makes any noises. Should I be concerned about pneumonia? in other ways (the way she is moving and he willingness to do so) she seems better.

Not necessarily. I find the best way to check for pneumonia is to watch their chest breathing. With pneumonia it will look like someone has a cord pulling in their chest quickly when they exhale. It will not look like the usual steady and slow decline.

Ok but she never made any sounds like this before, so I'm wondering why that may be. Perhaps I did something wrong when I was administering the medications...?

I tried the liquid (crushed) antibiotic. Didn't go well. She fought tooth and NAIL once she got a taste - it took 3 syringes. I think I'll try splitting it twice and giving it in 2 solid chunks next time. I learned that the 2 homeopathics that work (they say for ectopic eggs) are Bryonia and Hepar Sulph. Don't know if they will work in combo with antibiotics. From reading I've done in the past the later can negate the homeopathics but that's a discussion for the homeopaths.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm not sure why I am doing this though. I will not opt for the surgery, so if it doesn't pass (as it is apparently in the abdomen and I don't know if her stomach can digest and expell it), I assume she'll need to be put down at some point.

I’d keep giving her calcium gluconate through this week there have been members that gave it daily and it took 4-5 days before the egg passed.as for the noise she is making if you accidentally did get some into her lungs hopefully she can still recover. I accidentally aspirated on some elderberry syrup a couple years ago and didn’t have any side effects once I got passed the coughing. So hopefully the fact that she seems better is encouraging! I know they can fight when giving meds once wrapped put her between your knees and hold tight. It only takes a min to give the meds then she can be set free. I have sat on the floor to do this.

Yes I administer the same way but she was seeming to get used to it until the liquid antibiotic. Have you ever tried tasting them (antibiotics)? They are HORRIDLY (gaggingly) bitter! I'm allergic to dyes and preservatives, so when I need them, I open them (if in colored capsules) and mix them with applesauce and they still are disgusting! I have not been giving her the calcium gluconate (I don't have any but I know I can get it) because the vet said nothing about me administering it. They gave her an IV and a shot and they said they were very concentrated and would last at least a week. I just called them to see about that and they will be emailing me with the correct dose if they agree that I should administer it. I aslo asked them to send the digital x rays.

They said 2 ml. a day of the 10% calcium gluconate injectable but all anyone has around here is 23%. Is 23% double and a bit more than 10%?

So my hen (Fern) has gotten better but I have no idea why. She may have passed that egg...who knows. Perhaps it was not ectopic after all but I have not seen an egg anywhere and except for Monday when she got out and I was unable to catch her overnight, I saw whatever she was doing. She did btw, amazingly come back about noon the next day. Should I be giving her layer feed? Could the fact that there is a difference of 1% between the maintenance feed and the layer feed be the issue of why she has layed some eggs that have no shell and got into trouble with a stuck egg?

you should put out a dish of crushed oyster shells on the side of her regular food so she can eat as much as she wants to any time. i also dry and then crush the shells from their own eggs and add that in there too. mine love them. i’m so happy she is better!!

I do that daily as well. I did make a mistake on the calcium content of her feed. I was looking at the protein when I reported those %. There is significantly more calcium in the layer than the maintenance feed. The reason I moved to the maintenance feed is because this time of year my hens no longer lay eggs. Any thoughts about going through the winter and whether there is a need for more calcium then?
