Chicken friends I need guidence! :barnieClosing up my roosters tonight I noticed that Elvis has broken his beak! He is alert & oriented. Roosting with the other boys. I sprayed/dribbled it as best I could with Vetercyn (i couldn't even tell if I was getting it) , and then covered it well with Neosporin (no pain reliever kind). The only way I can figure he may have done this was trying to peck through ice in their water bucket? Maybe he got it stuck in hardware cloth separating them from the girls? These are my best guesses? There is a wound/crack by his nose holes, and then the tip seems to be holding on by the fleshy inside of his mouth. Not alot of blood, but deff some visible. I took these pictures as it looked when I noticed it, and before the neosporin application. What do I do next to help it heal without more injury? He obviously doesn't want me to touch it, and I want him to be comfortable. He is a big boy, and one of my top doodles. I have to work tomorrow so if I need to pick up anything I can do that, but if I can need to treat him further tonight I will do that also. Please help me help my doodle! @KikisGirls @ronott1 @casportpony any advice or direction?

There's not much you can do besides what you've already done. I'm not sure what you should do about the hanging bit maybe superglue it temporarily until it grows out? I'd be scared to clip it since it's still attached to the flesh. I've never seen a hanging broken beak usually it's just broke and gone. The superglue trick should work though, just be careful not to glue him shut poor guy.

When I adopted some chickens that had cut (some so severely cut that there was a permanent opening to their mouth), I added nutria-drench or apple cider vinegar to their water. (That was to help their overall health.)

I also gave them wet feed/fermented feed. I noticed that they couldn't pick up crumbled feed very well. Some couldn't pick up pellet feed very well either.

All of my chickens have grown healthy.

Another chicken already in house cracked/broke his beak. I did the same for him and he recovered well. The beak can regenerate/grow if it's not damaged too far up.

Let us know how he does & if you super glue the beak back on or the broken piece comes off.

*hugs*

Oh my goodness. Poor, poor guy. X2 I don't think there's anything else you can do. I have had two instances of injured lacerated bills, one in a duck (raccoon) and another a goose (fence believe it or not) in the goose I could treat with bluekote but couldn't get near my duck. Both cases were just fine.
I think you'll have to wait this out. Just make sure he has clean drinking water deep enough to get his whole beak into if he needs. Other than that? I know that factory birds are sometimes debeaked.... I'm sure he'll be fine.
Poor Elvis. If my "doodle" Nigel had this happen I'd feel horrible. I love roos.

I had a rooster break his beak earlier this year. That piece that is broken you should take off. You can probably open his mouth and tightly tie a thin string around in were it is broken. You want it tight enough to cut off the circulation to that end of the beak so that it will die and fall off. I would try to just take it off. I'd just pull it off and have flour near by to help stop any bleeding. Either way that part of the beak needs to come off. If you can't pull it off you can probably clip it off. Give your rooster crumbles or starter feed so it is easier for him to eat. Make surethe feeder is full so it is easier, too. Feeding him in a bowl might also be easier.

Thank you all for the replies, and support!! I can at least stop freaking out!! We recently switched their water dish to one that is large/deep so it doesn't freeze as fast on us. It has been sub zero weather lately (although tomorrow will be above freezing) so I don't think wet/soft food would stay soft long.
I am not comfortable taking tip off the rest of the way. I don't want to cause a larger wound then is necessary or cause the other boys to pick on him. (He is in a flock of roosters). It seems attached on there good, and does not easily move. Even though it is crooked, and cracked through it seems like it is still very attached. We will make sure their food dishes are extra full or him too.
Here is a link, with instructions and pictures, on how to repair it with a tea bag and superglue gel. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/01/repairing-chickens-broken-beak.html
I have read the instructions and feel like i can manage this. I have done the "burrito towel wrap", and for sure have tea bags. I will dig for super glue, and see if I have the gel kind. If not I will grab some, and patch his beak tomorrow night. I will keep you posted on my progress!

I agree with everyone else now it's the hardest part the waiting game I really do how he gets better I wish you all the best

Fingers crossed he heals well. I'd glue it too.

I had a hen who was my favorite for many years who was missing the hard part of the upper beak entirely- there was a little fleshy bit but that was all. She lost it when a rhode island red with PTSD attacked her (long story, but she almost lost her life). Victoria, the polish, lived with her funny beak and messed up eyelid for a long, long time. I believe she was close to 8 when she went and it was peaceful. No illness or disease took her. Just age.

So even if he ends up "funny" like my Victoria did, he will still be able to have a happy life.
