I live in a town that doesn't allow roosters. One of my 12 chicks grew into a gorgeous, gentle Jersey Giant rooster. I really like him, and my close neighbors do, too. To disguise his early morning crowing, every night I put him into a guest bathroom shower stall set up with a small wooden ladder. Every morning after 8:00 a.m. I let him out and clean up after him. I just hope his occasional crowing during the day isn't heard by a city animal control officer. (This happened to me once before with another rooster who crowed all the time, and I had to find him another home.)
The shower stall solution is getting a little old, so I am thinking of building an outdoor "rooster bunker" out of plywood and soundproofing material where he can sleep at night. It would be just a box with no floor, just big enough to house one sleeping rooster. There would be a perch on the inside, and handles on the outside to facilitate moving it (like a chicken tractor). One side would be hinged to open like a door so the rooster could walk in. (My rooster voluntarily walks into the shower stall.) Maybe a few air holes drilled in a few places.
I would appreciate any feedback on this idea. Has anyone else built a rooster bunker?
