Rooster Bunker

I live in a town that doesn't allow roosters. One of my 12 chicks grew into a gorgeous, gentle Jersey Giant rooster. I really like him, and my close neighbors do, too. To disguise his early morning crowing, every night I put him into a guest bathroom shower stall set up with a small wooden ladder. Every morning after 8:00 a.m. I let him out and clean up after him. I just hope his occasional crowing during the day isn't heard by a city animal control officer. (This happened to me once before with another rooster who crowed all the time, and I had to find him another home.)

The shower stall solution is getting a little old, so I am thinking of building an outdoor "rooster bunker" out of plywood and soundproofing material where he can sleep at night. It would be just a box with no floor, just big enough to house one sleeping rooster. There would be a perch on the inside, and handles on the outside to facilitate moving it (like a chicken tractor). One side would be hinged to open like a door so the rooster could walk in. (My rooster voluntarily walks into the shower stall.) Maybe a few air holes drilled in a few places.

I would appreciate any feedback on this idea. Has anyone else built a rooster bunker?

Seems like a lot of work to me for a rooster.

My rooster crows all day long - if your going to get caught it will be becasue a neighbor turn you in. If they really do like him you should be fine. It's only when someone complains that a city burocrat gets off thier butt to do something.

My rooster bantom gets taken into the bathroom for the morning, seems easy enough,as I wake up before he does:)

Hi, midgetfarms and dndt:

Thanks for responding to my post.

As far as I know, my neighbors didn't turn me in. The animal control officer was in the neighborhood investigating a dog and he heard my first rooster crow. Magnus crowed all the time in a very high-pitched voice. My current rooster, Houdini crows less frequently, so I'm hoping that doesn't happen again. I'm stacking the odds against a neighbor complaining by keeping him inside in the early morning.

Also, my bathroom solution isn't going to be ideal when I go away for several days. My neighbor watches my chickens when I'm gone, and I don't want to ask her to carry the rooster into the house! She loves him in the backyard, but she's a fastidious housekeeper, and I don't think she would care to deal with his droppings in the shower.

Has anyone out there built a rooster bunker?
