I've got a Brahma Rooster (he's a smaller size, same as my chickens) who cannot walk on one leg for about 4 days now. When he does stand, he paws at the ground without touching. We had first noticed his belly was very red and feathers were pulled out under him for about 2 weeks. (and no, he does not really "pester" my chickens much). He's fairly young (I think about 4).
I bought powder to treat any mite/lice that might be present since I did see black (knat size) bugs in the box he was staying in. So they are gone now, but he still is not walking and won't come out of the coop. His foot is clean, doesn't look like there are any mites in his legs and no sign of any disease. His belly is still red. He's eating normal and drinking a little. He seems bright and still calls out in the morning....Any help would be great. He's so friendly, I'd hate to lose him.

Welcome to BYC. He could have injured a leg jumping off a roost. Lying on the bedding or the mites may have caused the redness. In chickens who can't walk well or roost up off the floor, they can develop breast blisters on their chest kind of like a pressure sore. Does he have any swelling or a dark spot on the bottom of his foot pads, or swelling of any leg joints? Can he move his toes and legs? Was he vaccinated for Mareks disease? Have you added any new chickens to your flock recently?

Thanks for the reply. Well, honestly my husband is now convinced my draft horse stepped on him because he swears he saw him walking just a few minutes before he started limping...but honestly, there were no marks, and in the 10 years I've had chickens and horses, they have always kept out of eachothers way. I guess anything is possible, but that doesn't explain the redness.

He is not moving any of his toes, the entire foot seems limp.He can paw at the ground using the upper part of his leg, but that's it. It is not swollen, nor was it right from the beginning (which is why I don't think it was my horse). No dark spots, and I have never had them vaccinated. I'm not sure what the feed store where I got him from had done so or not.
About a months ago I did add 6 (very healthy) babies to the mix. None of my other chickens are sick though.
The redness is a very large area, the entire under side of him, oddly, the same side as the leg he can't walk on. The redness began a few weeks ago as I mentioned...and there are no signs of mites anymore. I believe that has been handled. I also used fireplace ash on him & the spots where they all roll in the dirt before I had bought the powder.

I'm having this exact same issue with the leg "pawing" in my 4 yr old brahma Roo. No red belly and foot pads are clear. Any update on how you treated or the outcome? I realize this post is quite old. Looking for any kind of direction. He's my favorite. I've been giving him some aspirin for swelling but no progress this is about day 5. Help!!!
