Rooster Chat

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post on but I'm going to ask my question anyway.

My friend has six roosters (I know crazy) she has four polish crested roosters one leghorn rooster and one light brahma rooster. The leghorn is in a coop with a bunch of hen with a separate run, one of the Polish is with their only polish hen(they get along without any issues when it comes to mating, the hen is in charge out of the two) in their own coop and run, and then the last three polish and light brahma roosters are in a house together with again separate run. The three polish and light brahma are the issue... the brahma is fine he doesn't do anything "wrong" but one of the polish roosters is very mean two the other two polish roosters to the point that he spurred one in the eye. My friend says that they only fight when they're free ranging and when they're in the run they almost never have an issue. Why is this? And is there anything they can do without having to re home a rooster?

The first thing that comes to mind is removing the spurs of all the roosters in the bachelor pen. It's a quick, easy, safe procedure that anyone can do, and it would make it safer for all of them. I'd do all the other roosters while I was at at. You can find plenty of how-to videos on you-tube.

ok today one of my hens was found dead but the roosters kept on trying to MATE with the dead hen

I told my friend, she says they're gonna trim the tomorrow

What are some of the qualities you guys like to look for when selecting breeding roosters for your flock raised from chicks? Keepers or eaters per se.

Hello I have simular Cockerel trubles. All 3 of mine got along just great but I had to move the two younger ones into a adjoining coop.
Well one day the younger ones escaped into the main coop and tried to jump one of the older hens,She said no and Rocky Rooster had to defend her. So the fight was on! Now all 3 or them are arch enemy's .
The smallest ones name is now fried chicken and the other is the General as he is a large very stately Rhode island red
None of mine have pointed spurs yet, But there beak's are deadly.for awhile I was letting one live in my future meat bird coop(has no ceiling)
and fried chicken was just running lose in the barn.
Then I found him in with the general near death, blood everywhere .Now Fried chicken lives in a small cage and his days are numbered.
Ive seen birds with there beaks cut to stop peaking. It would seem to me this needs to be done also.

On another note if you find a chicken in shock near death they will be very cold if near death putting them under a heat light seems to help revive them.

If you ask me,cutting beaks is cruel, just like dubbing them. You need either a seperate cage, with one rooster in each with a few hens of their owns,or just one rooster.

Roosters have natural extinct that just kinda kicks in at random and they go off on one another. Some roosters just do not get along, and can be together, some tou can manage, some dont care at all.

I never condone trimming the beaks or the spurs, all of my roosters have their feathers, beaks, and spurs fully intact. They rarely fight, and if a fight breaks out I or my geese break it up.

Couldn't help but comment. I had a GORGEOUS big beautiful RIR rooster. Big Red (original huh?) and a big New Hampshire rooster. Big Red darn near killed the NH and it was not pretty. It didn't matter in the end how beautiful I thought he was....he got chance after chance and even after I started going in the roo pen with a trash can lid...he wouldn't behave. The day he flew straight up in the air and tried to come over the trash can lid I was done. He went into a friend's crockpot and by that time I hated that rooster with every fiber of my being. The RIR roo doesn't have a bad reputation for nothing. I will NEVER have another one. That is a BIG rooster to have to deal with aggression. I would seriously rethink keeping the general over Fried Chicken. You don't say what breed Fried Chicken is but I would not keep a RIR roo. People tried to tell me too and I kept giving that rotten roo one more chance. Then he was just wreaking havoc all over and becoming dangerous.

This has nothing to do with roosters but it might be worth a laugh

Monday when I got home I decided to move a chicken into a cage inside my barn.So I grabbed this roll of paper to put on the floor(for poop) and a large wolf spider came running out and almost went up my arm. Im not overly afraid of them but this still made me jump.
I managed to shake him off before he got on me. Then I chased him away with the paper roll.I don't kill them as they eat bugs and theres really no use in it.
Well I went back to putting the paper on the floor and I guess I upset the spider messing with his home. Because he came back REALLY FAST ran across my right foot.
Im not sure if he jumped or what but suddenly he was on my left foot and ran half way up my naked hairy leg before I could react.
The spider still lives but if I find him again he will die!
