Rooster Chat

Pics
I'm losing sleep because of his non stop crowing and in hopes that the neighbors aren't disturbed by it I brought him in the house. Tried a covered dog crate in the laundry... Ended up being an Amplification Chamber! :(

Anyone have any luck with the No Crow Collar?

I'm scared to try it due to the bad reviews being that it KILLED their rooster. I don't want to risk that!

Also, he doesn't seem happy, he seems stressed. But maybe having the constant urge to crow does that, like a never ending case of the hiccups.

My boy Indie is 5 months old and started crowing at 4.Idk if its bc he's young but he only crows in the morning and once or twice during the day and it's not even that loud. I have noticed though that in the mornings he's aggressive which he usually isn't.

I should add, Nero is 13 months, so this is his first "adult" (he hasn't had his first mature molt yet) Spring. His feet/legs haven't changed color to show the hormone line, but his comb is a little darker than usual. He's taking a break right now, but it won't last more than a few minutes. Then he goes right back to over 100dBs, full body crowing. All day starting at 0500, ending just before sunset.

Is he an only boy? If he is...and young....he may just be insecure and feels the need to let "All the Other" Roos out there, that this is his ground! He doesn't really want anyone to show up....cause he's scared! Which in real life, doesn't make sense....but neither does finding a tasty tidbit, and rather than sitting tight and eating it....they grab it and run around like a crazed bird....only attracting more attention....silly birds...but they do it all the time! Find him a mature Roo, if you have enough hens....one that won't care about him...just put him in his place and leave him alone....to learn how to be a good rooster.

I was wondering if it was similar to when a dog is put in a new environment and stresses out about his new responsibilities, gets overwhelmed, and barks at everything. Nero definitely seems stressed so your description fits. Unfortunately, I only have two hens after an attack by the neighbor's dog. Two more in the brooder, but my coop/run only holds 7 birds total.

I'm zoned for agriculture, but I'm sure someone could still complain to the county, this IS California, after all.

So how to get him over the hump and back to a more relaxed life before someone tries to do something drastic?

No one has complained yet, but all it takes is one person, and he really is ridiculous with the crowing. Plus, it's hard to see him freaked out about everything. Poor guy is going to give himself a chicken ulcer.

What an awful way to live. I've visited Cal. and had a good time and met some wonderful people but I could never live there. Something dramatic would happen.

You might try to use something the birds really like....hang a couple cabbages just high enough for the birds to have to jump a bit to get to it....food will usually shut the rooster up...he will be busy tidbiting if he's a good roo. Change his focus.

On the hanging cabbage, if you use string/rope make sure it can't untie ao one may try to eat it. Yes had it happen.

Oof. That's how most of my lectures go at work. Not the eating rope bit, but the let-me-tell-you-about-this-crazy-thing-from-experience bit :)

I've been crating him at night inside the house. He seems to enjoy it. He sleeps more soundly, crows only at two intervals (4ish and 7ish) and when he goes back to the coop in the morning (0800) he is far less cranky. Only two nights so far, fingers crossed.

The boyfriend is concerned we'll end up with a house rooster, but he likes going out to his girls and rolling in the dirt and other chickeny things so I think it'll be fine?

I'm hoping to only have to do this until it gets hot and then the closest neighbors run their AC all night which drowns out all other noise.

Dear AE...sounds like a good plan...maybe he was overwhelmed by his hormones and the close proximity of all those girls. Good luck with your roo! Hope all works out for you and your roo...might also make him very tame to you...it's always nice if you can handle your birds.
