Dusti is a first generation chick. Lavender Orpington cockerel over a Buff O hen. I called her my over sized robin chick. I had sent a picture of her to Larry's breeder and they were certain that with her round shape she was an Orpington and I have to agree given that she is the only chick in the flock with that shape and color.

I'm thinking that maybe I'll stumble across a LO hen in the future that I can try crossing with my Buff O cockerels. It would be interesting to see if switching the breeding order would change the color pattern. I really don't need any more roosters at the moment. I'm knee deep in them.

Lavender Orp/Buff Orp cross very interesting. I simply adore the look!I may need to add some Orpingtons to my flock as this is a beautiful bird.

Thank you. As she matures, her feathers are retaining the same color but getting longer and fluffier. When I pick her up, her body size is like that of a Cornish Game Hen. She is just all feathers. I'm anxious to see if she keeps the color and the fluffiness as she grows into a hen. I picture her as maybe looking like a English Orpington when she matures even though neither her sire or mom were English bred.

Ok hi everyone.I have a rooster named Zeus and he is about a little over a year old.He has apurs that are about a inch and half long,im guessing.I was realizing how dangerous he could be to the younger cockerals just now learning about respect.I was thinking about de_spurring him but not surr if it would make a difference because all that will happen is I will be twist the old shell off and getting a new spir underneath.Which it seems like maybe a shorter spur will not do too much damgae, but just how short will it be ,seeing as its only maybe a inch and a half long.

With a larger spur, it should end up about an inch and a half long after the sheath is removed. With his being only 1 1/2" his could be considerably shorter or it could just sharpen his spur but not shorten it.
I've seen I go both ways.

these were roosters even the dark one, I had a lady pick them up she will finish raising them. The GLW was making peeps that said..."you are putting me in this box but you love me right?"

I haven't heard of this procedure! Learned something new! I take my roosters in to my bird vet & she just rounds the spurs off for me. I'm thankful I found a bird vet because I don't think I could mange taking care of spurs on my own. That seems a little more involved than what I can do on my own. :D

They barely feel anything, and the shell is extremely easy turn twist off,but even easier when you stick a hot potatoes on it,let it sit for about 35 seconds or more, than take pliers and twist it.

Alright.we have one 6 month old RIR who has started acting like an actual rooster. So of course,he has started drama between him and Zeus our Alpha.
I wanted to know if it is completely normal for the Alpha roo,to continuously chase the other younger less dominate one off?Because the last time our other rooster did this we ended up having to give one up.

So I'm hoping it is completely normal?Just the older guy showing the younger one a little "Respect"?

The thing is, from the rooster point of view, it is all normal. So:
  • They may settle it, and live peacefully sharing the duties.
  • They may become more violent toward each other, possibly fighting to death
That is all normal behavior for roosters, so when you have them, you need to have it set up so that you can if you need to separate them immediately.
