Rooster Chat

When I had game rooster, none ever attacked us but those dog gone black sex links are bad. We only have one left and he chases my sons all over the yard. I keep telling them to stand up for themselves but he has his bluff in. Thank goodness his spurs aren't very big yet. Since he's the last one and my girls have grown fond of him. I guess because he stands guard over them while they eat. I'm thinking he will probably end up in the soup pot. We are having chicken and dumplings tonight via one of his brothers, lol. Incidentally, they were handled a lot when young while my game rooster were never handled unless necessary.

I'm noticing that all of you here have roosters, and seem to do fine with them. We ended up with one Welsummer and he was quite dangerous-attacking us in the face and the legs and we had to get rid of him.   Is the behavior mostly breed specific? Or should we have handled him less?  Handled him differently?  I'm not sure what we did wrong but I would like to have a well behaved rooster around the farm.  Advice? Opinions? Any breeds that are more likely to be more manageable or even friendly?

Get a Polish rooster there are friendly to humans and to the younger birds
Well mine is a well mannered boy!!!

My polish was terrible with the hens. All he did was mate and run. I gave him a year to develop better manners with the hens but it never happened so he got eaten.

Oh my maybe it just my boy that is well mannered :/ or it could just be your that was not well mannered

They do all end up with different personalities. I had one years ago that wasn't too bad, but I haven't had troubles with aggressive roosters no matter the breed, so I judge mine on how the hens like them.

Yeah...as you can see him and the EE pullet are inseparable he has never pecked her or show ANY aggression none what so ever! I have had him a couple months now and he has GREAT manners to people and the chicks

My BSL is a brat but he's good to his girls. When I was overrun with roosters him and the rest of the boys would spend most their times fighting with the boys and driving the pullets crazy. One would hop off and another would hop on, again and again, but since they are all gone but the one, he has become quiet the gentleman with the girls and they love him. I will teach him to stop attacking the husband and kids if I can but he pretty much leave me alone. I'm not afraid of him and will stop chasing him if he starts threatening me. It usually works for a few days.

The "Boys"...5 cockrels are causing a problem...the buggers are lurking about, just outside the coop pop door...(a gang of rapists) waiting to pounce on any hen or pullet, foolish enough to give in to hunger or thirst...although I was still in my jammies, I took care of those nasty boys! Herded them into the isolation end of the run and closed the door....I will wait till the girls have had breakfast and a nice drink of water, it's 2 below zero out there right now...give the boys a chance to "Chill Out"...the girls will probably spend most of the day inside today, unless the sun comes out...although that's not looking very promising right now. I feel sorry for the boys, it's not their fault, they are just doing what nature is telling them to do, within their "Itty-Bitty" brains....heck! I know from experience!!! It's a sure thing that their "Gonads" are bigger than their brains!!! I've put enough of them in the soup pot in the past!!! Those of you that do eat your extra cockrels...and do the deed yourselves can attest to that!!! And to think most people think it's just a joke! In some cases it's the truth!!! Ha! Never dawned on me before now.
