Rooster Chat

:barnie those mean hens keep pecking at my Oscar!
They do peck at bloody flesh...I noticed that his Big comb is frost bitten at the points...you might try putting some blue coat or such thing on the bloody areas and then coat the whole thing with Vaseline...it's supposed to help prevent frost bite. It may also make his comb less inviting to the hens. Is he younger than the girls? Older hens will push a younger birds around, male or female, and when they want to get there point across that go for the heads. If he's being picked on this may be why...he will have to put his foot down or they will continue to beat him up.

My buff Orpingtons get frostbite, eventually they end up with a smaller comb. Mine have always healed up without any intervention.

These are my two boy, the one in back is 5 years old and has see more severe winters so he has less comb, the one in front is 3 years old.

My 3 year old barnevelder has also been dubbed by nature.

From now on i plan to keep smaller comber roosters.

only one is older than him (she is 3 yrs) he is a year and a half old. 1 is the same age and the others are 9 months old. I think he is being beat up by the younger girls! maybe that is the reason why he has gone coockoo! they still pick on him some! others say have said they've been pulling his feathers so yeah....
